LABOR powerbrokers in the Illawarra are searching for candidates to replace besieged Wollongong MP Noreen Hay in the aftermath of the underpants dance scandal.
Ms Hay's political career is on a knife's edge after Premier Nathan Rees yesterday dumped her as parliamentary secretary for health and booted her from a powerful ALP committee. The Mercury understands the search is on for another woman to run for preselection."There are people in the Labor Party that are actively searching for a replacement," one source said.Mr Rees informed Ms Hay yesterday morning of her demotions, explaining later he "wanted a fresh face". The latest controversy involving Ms Hay comes after Kiama MP Matt Brown was accused of stripping down to his underwear at a late night drunken party in his parliamentary office and straddling Ms Hay in front of her daughter. Mr Brown and Ms Hay vehemently deny he simulated any sex act with her.Mr Brown was sacked on Thursday as minister for police and the Illawarra but is expected to continue as a local member.?
